This Mouawad Diamond Ring Could Fetch Nearly $2 Million at Auction

The top lot at Bonhams’s upcoming London Jewels sale proves that two diamonds are better than one.

A Mouawad “Toi et Moi” ring will be the star of the show on June 13, when it’s expected to hammer down for an impressive £1 million to £1.5 million ($1.3 million to $1.9 million). The accessory features a five-carat radiant-cut fancy intense blue diamond obliquely set next to a 5.1-carat radiant-cut fancy purple-pink diamond. The two stones are surrounded by a gallery and shoulders pavé-set with brilliant-cut pink- and blue-tinted diamonds.

Jennifer Tonkin, a co-head of the jewelry department for Bonhams in the United Kingdom, called the center stones “miracles of nature” in a statement, adding that the auction house is “immensely proud to offer” the ring. “London Jewels showcases best in class examples from every era, including Kashmir sapphires, certificated diamonds, and many grades of exceptional coloured diamonds,” she said.

Elsewhere in the auction, more diamond pieces are expected to be the standouts. A diamond fringe necklace from around 1950 is estimated at £200,000 to £300,000 ($255,000 to $382,000). The piece showcases graduating baguette and brilliant-cut diamonds, with a fringe of brilliant and marquise-cut diamonds leading to pear-shaped diamond drops. And a diamond rivière necklace from the 19th century, with cushion-shaped diamonds in pinched collet settings, could achieve £100,000 ($127,000).

Some of the Art Deco pieces on offer don’t match those eye-popping estimates, but they include accessories from some of the most well-known and coveted jewelers. A rare Cartier bangle from around 1930 ($32,000 to $45,000) sees ruby cabochons set within an engraved Persian-inspired mount, with graduated emerald, ruby, and sapphire cabochons on top of tiered rock crystal. Meanwhile, a Bulgari brooch from about the same time ($15,000 to $19,000) uses a rare openwork design to show off a trio of brilliant-cut diamond chevrons.

And if colored diamonds are more your speed but the Mouawad is a bit out of budget, Bonhams has a delightful set of yellow-colored options. A Graff diamond pendant necklace centers a 9.7-carat rectangular brilliant-cut stone beneath a smaller heart-shaped diamond ($96,000 to $121,000). A 10-carat fancy intense yellow diamond is also showcased in a diamond ring, with an estimate of $76,000 to $102,000.

With a total of 120 lots appearing at the London Jewels sale, there’s likely to be something for every collector, whichever style you fancy most.
