One of Paris’s biggest hotel suites just got a swish upgrade
Parisian grande dame Hôtel Plaza Athénée has unveiled the results of a major overhaul of its fifth and sixth floor, which included a refresh of its iconic Royal Suite.
Led by French design firm Moinard Bétaille, the refurbishment did not seek to reinvent the wheel, rather, it took the hotel’s signature 18th-century-inspired elegance that guests know and love, and elevated it to match modern expectations.

Including the Royal Suite, 49 rooms have received a swish upgrade. The hotel worked with the Moinard Bétaille team, who also reimagined the hotel’s lobby and several of its esteemed restaurants, to create six new color palettes, each of which was imagined with a fresh, soft feel in mind. While each of the newly redesigned suites adheres to one of these color schemes, each is completely individually configured with a unique layout to ensure no two in the hotel are the same.
Among the new details are silk headboards adorned in a foliage-inspired pattern (in reference to the Virginia creeper plant that famously wraps itself around Hôtel Plaza Athénée’s facade); tailormade hanging bedside lamps; marble bathrooms; Louis XVI-style bedside tables; and a selection of restored period furniture.

In the four-bedroom Royal Suite, which at over 4,800 sq ft is among the largest in Paris, details such as moldings, cornices and Versailles parquet floors pay homage to the hotel’s history, while concealed elements, such as a travel trunk that opens up to be a bar, add an element of fun. In the bathroom, a sauna and a Hamman bedecked in Italian marble await.
As part of the upgrade, Hôtel Plaza Athénée has also applied a number of waste-preventing and energy-saving measures and initiatives, including in-room presence sensors to control lighting, recyclable amenities and complete external insulation to improve thermal performance.
