Each year, the Met Gala’s theme gives A-list attendees the opportunity for a wide range of sartorial interpretation. This time around, its theme (“Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion”) and adjacent dress code (“The Garden of Time,” a nod to the 1962 short story by J.G. Ballard) guaranteed one thing: There would be flowers. Guests took to all types of floral motifs in their garments, from appliqué gowns to giant rosette lapels. While the adornment also included a few flower-inspired jewelry moments (such as Amanda Seyfried’s Chaumet diamond tiara), most of the jewelry balanced out all of the blooms with classic designs, shapes and cuts, done mostly in diamonds, plus a few major emerald moments from the likes of Cardi B and Kris Jenner. As for the men of the red carpet? They continued the decorative brooch trend, even adding multiples for a veritable garden of gems on their lapels.
Jennifer Lopez in Tiffany & Co.
The star lived up to her Met Gala co-chair duties for the evening with a brand new set from the Tiffany & Co. Blue Book collection, including a necklace set in platinum and yellow gold with a 20-plus-carat center diamond and accompanying diamonds. Lopez wore the matching diamond, gold and platinum bracelet and matched the maximalist jewelry look with a couture Schiaparelli gown.
Ayo Edebiri in Boucheron
The “Bear” star was floral from head to toe in a Loewe guipure lace gown and matching headpiece, all of which made Edebiri’s Boucheron jewels a breath of fresh air. The actress paired Bleu Infini pear-shaped aquamarine pendant earrings from the brand’s Timeless High Jewelry collection with a matching aquamarine and diamond ring.
Gabrielle Union in Tiffany & Co.
The actress chose a suite of Tiffany & Co. jewelry that hinted at a midcentury style revival, with a pair of drop earrings, a diamond bracelet and a starfish diamond brooch, which Union wore in a very-vintage updo and a Michael Kors custom gown.
Nicole Kidman in Harry Winston
The actress let her archival Balenciaga gown do most of the talking on the red carpet, with the exception of Harry Winston’s Secret Combination diamond bracelet, set in platinum with approximately 69 carats of diamonds and worn with a pair of white opera gloves. Unseen but also worn were a pair of the jewelry brand’s Winston Cluster diamond earrings in platinum with 15 carats of diamonds.
Jeff Goldblum in Tiffany & Co.
The actor took the jewelry brooch trend up a few notches by adding not two but three pieces to his tuxedo lapel (alongside an extra pair of eyeglasses). All three brooches came from Tiffany & Co’s Jean Schlumberger collection, including the brand’s iconic Bird on a Rock brooch.
Penelope Cruz in Chanel
The actress and longtime brand ambassador walked the carpet in head to toe Chanel, wearing a custom haute couture bustier gown embellished with eight different types of French floral laces. It was paired with an equally intricate diamond necklace and bracelet set from the brand’s “Tweed Pastel” jewelry collection, along with its “Tweed Mademoiselle” ring in 18K white gold and diamonds and “Bouton de Camélia” diamond earrings.
Brie Larson in Fred Leighton
The actress proved that sometimes the best sparkle is subtle, choosing a pair of early 19th century gold pendant earrings, a cushion-cut citrine ring, a citrine collet set ring and an oval-cut amethyst ring, all from Fred Leighton. The gold jewels were a perfect palette fit for Larson’s layered Prada gown.
Lewis Hamilton
The British F1 driver hit almost all of the jewelry categories on the red carpet, pairing his Burberry custom look with diamond cluster earrings, a thorn motif pave necklace, yellow diamond bracelets and a serious yellow diamond pinky ring alongside a pearl and diamond ring.
Jon Batiste in Cartier
The music artist made a case for an Art Deco comeback with a circa 1928 Cartier diamond brooch set in platinum. The star wore statement piece alongside a high jewelry necklace from the brand, done in yellow and white diamonds, a Cartier Tank Normale watch in yellow gold, a Trinity de Cartier diamond cushion ring and a yellow gold Cartier Love ring.
Rosalia in Dior
Wearing an all black custom Dior gown, the music artist’s diamond necklace, also from the brand, was a standout—even under her black face veil.
Leon Bridges
While the look approached overstimulation, the music artist’s multiple brooches and tie pin, all done in multi-colored-stones, were the height of the Met Gala’s garden theme.
Gigi Hadid in Chopard
With an intricate Thom Browne floral gown that took some 2.8 million beads and 5,000 hours to create, Gigi Hadid’s Chopard diamond pieces were refreshingly simple. The French brand’s white and yellow gold necklace from its high jewelry collection included 26.24-carats of yellow diamonds and 25.65-carats of white diamonds, which were matched with a pair of earrings featuring 28.81-carats of pear-shaped yellow diamonds and white diamonds and a 10.26-carat rectangular cut yellow diamond ring, plus a diamond infinity band from its L´Heure du Diamant collection.
Amanda Seyfried in Chaumet
The actress went maximalist on the red carpet with Chaumet jewelry that included a diamond tiara, worn with silver hair paint — all of which matched Seyfried’s custom silver floral Prada gown.
Sarah Jessica Parker
The actress has a long history of hat wearing at the Met Gala. This year, Parker continued the tradition in a Philip Treacy custom creation — but she also let her jewelry shine, pairing an extra long strand of knotted pearls with various vintage diamond pieces from Briony Raymond, Marlo Laz and Gray & Davis, all of which were either affixed to her hat, pinned to her ponytail or as rings and earrings.
