Belmond Debuts New Sleeper Train: The Britannic Explorer – Elite Traveler

For a small island nation, the Brits aren’t exactly known for exploring their own backyard. While it’s easy to poke fun, anyone who’s braved the bumper-to-bumper Cornish commute or spent an evening on a delayed train will understand why so many have opted to fly farther afield – well that is unless they’ve stepped on board a Belmond train.

Known for redefining luxury travel, Belmond has long offered a way to explore Britain with style and ease. Now, with the launch of The Britannic Explorer, A Belmond Train, set to debut in July 2025, there’s an entirely new way to see England and Wales, turning the idea of the staycation into a grand adventure.

The Britannic Explorer will offer three-night itineraries across three stunning routes: the rugged coastlines of Cornwall, the dramatic fells of the Lake District, and the rolling hills of Wales – there’s also the option to combine routes to create six-night itineraries exploring Wales and Cornwall or Wales and the Lake District.

Each journey promises more than just good views from the windows, as passengers have the option to step off and explore the destinations with expertly guided tours of local treasures: from private dinners at the renowned Hauser & Wirth Somerset Gallery, wild swimming in the Lake District or visiting Cornwall’s serene Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens.

As Belmond’s vice-president of trains and cruises, Gary Franklin, put it: “The Britannic Explorer offers something truly unique; an opportunity to discover the rugged Cornish coastline to Snowdonia’s untamed National Park and the vast expanses of the Lake District like never before.”

Back on board, guests will discover The Britannic Explorer is packed with amenities designed to elevate every moment of the journey. Unwind in the onboard wellness suite after a day of exploring, or head to the lively observation car, home to a botanically inspired Bar that serves up craft cocktails with stunning views of the countryside.

Similarly taking cues from the breathtaking scenery outside, the train’s interiors, designed by London-based studio Albion Nord, are a true reflection of Britain’s natural beauty. The interiors of the train’s 18 cabins are thoughtfully designed to echo the surrounding scenery, while each of the three Grand Suites – Elder, Valerian and Juniper – draws inspiration from the hues of their namesake indigenous flower found in blooming English gardens.

Of course, no luxury journey would be complete without unforgettable cuisine, and The Britannic Explorer has brought in culinary heavyweight Simon Rogan to curate the dining experience. Rogan’s menus will showcase the very best of British farm-to-fork dining, with seasonal, locally sourced ingredients reflecting each region’s unique flavors.

“For me, true luxury lies in humble ingredients, grown with care, respect for their surroundings, and harvested at their peak,” shared Rogan upon the announcement.

“I am very excited to bring this approach to the launch of The Britannic Explorer, where each plate will reflect Britain’s diverse landscapes. I hope every passenger not only enjoys the flavors but also feels a connection between the dishes and the journey, making their time on board truly memorable.”
